Multimodal Texts and Keys to Literacy

Have you looked at the resources on the Primary National Strategy ‘Keys to learning in literacy and mathematics’ yet?  It has been in school for a while now but as only one copy was sent, then perhaps you haven’t seen it yet.

It is well worth investigating as it contains resources to support the new frameworks.  I personally particularly value the mulimodal texts. The disks are available from DfES Publications.  Telephone 0845 60 222 60 and quote reference: DfES 0360-2006DVD-EN or try downloading from www.standards.dfes.gov.ukIt contains a range or resources, amongst them a number of multimodal texts and all the support materials you need to help you utilise them effectively within the classroom.  The texts are aimed at writing targets and learning objectives for KS1 & 2 and include ‘The True Story of Little Red Riding Hood’ aimed at Year 2, ‘Lost Teddy’ which can be adapted to support years 1 & 2,  ‘On the Run’ aimed at  Years 3 & 4  and finally ‘Castle Attack’ aimed at Years 5 & 6.  It is not expected that all the files will be used as teachers are encouraged to pick and mix to best fit their teaching objectives.

The resources, most importantly support practitioners in linking “their own use of ICT to support teaching and children’s use of ICT to support their learning.”

All resources are all copyright free and can be modifed to suit individual needs.  If you haven’t used multimodal texts before then these really are worth investigating.  The interactive text ‘Lost Teddy’ is great as a introduction so why not start there?  The guidance and suggested teaching sequences are excellent and will save lots of time.

For Subject Leaders there is even guidance for professional development meetings.

Once you have used interactive, multimodal texts why not try to create you own using PowerPoint?  The children will certainly enjoy developing their own.
